(no subject)
I read through all of this last night. It took about three hours. And I IMmed with someone who already knew about it and actually knew more from knowing people closer to the story, and at the time, well past midnight, I wasn't in the right mind to say anything.
I woke up this morning and realized that not saying something, when I'm interested in the outcome and when people are being bullied, is quite like being on that side and saying it's okay that shit happened.
I don't know the full story, I don't know any of the parties involved, I don't know anyone through Wincon, I don't know shit, basically. But what I do know is that there is no conceivable way to prove someone takes issue with a situation and wishes to not be a part of it anymore, or even wanted to in the first place.
As someone who is dealing with VERY uncomfy situations, being pushed into unwanted moments by a complete stranger, and was forced to the police by her own mother, I can verify that being on the receiving end of unwanted attention is one of the worst things to deal with. And it's just as hard, if not harder, to stand up and say something about it because you don't want to bring further attention to yourself. SO STOP CALLING OUT THE VICTIMS.
There's a reason the justice system and the media don't name victims of crimes, okay? I learned this in my VERY FIRST journalism class and it's obvious on shows like CSI and Law & Order and what the hell else you watch besides SPN. They've been victimized once, why live it out again? I mean, there are full-fledged movies about this kind of thing (The Accused anyone?) And seriously, I don't care how little or how much someone was put into a corner, there's no reason the accused is welcome to brow beat them into the public eye. And before anyone is all 'but she's being brow beaten in the public eye' ... she brought that on herself. You'll notice how NO ONE has been talking about this for two years and now it's like two steps away from being a ripped from the headlines episode on CSI: Miami or some other douchebaggy procedural drama.
I'm not a lawyer, I don't work for one, I don't know any in real life. I do have a best friend who works for a defense attorney ... But you know, that ain't any real credibility so get off the high horse and recognize what you're doing. The bullying and threats only makes it look worse. If someone's willing to go out of the range of sanity for all of fandom and bully and bash possible victims/accusers/supports, it really doesn't seem to be a stretch that it might happen in a hotel room with a considerably smaller group of people, just sayin'.
Making someone uncomfortable in any way is not okay, to do so after liquor and while locked up in a room or following them around, whatever it is that 'supposedly' went on, is seriously disturbed. If someone says something happened, just step back and let the shit go through the proper channels. It's a convention, not an entire life wiped away. Be grateful the police AREN'T involved, and stop begging for this proof. There are no charges being filed and no one is being sued. So, okay, your username is being defamed. Seriously, this is ONLINE. Step back, change your username, flock down, whatever. But it is NEVER okay to call out victims and demand they be named. THAT'S the law.
It's amazing that watching nearly 15 seasons of Law & Order, every episode of SVU, and a state school education gives me more insight into this than some of the crazies who're running around XD
