R | These Hands are Too Big For This

MOAR ANIMALS! I won't be able to get a ton of these done this weekend, but I am aware of the list still waiting to be finished.

For [livejournal.com profile] earthquakedream and [livejournal.com profile] dramaphile who both asked for similar animals.

1,100 words

Contrary to popular belief, Jensen and Jared do not spend a lot of time in Texas together. They’re usually settled on wanting to be with their families and old friends. And the fact that they already spend nearly twenty-four hours a day for nine months together, they’re perfectly fine being apart during breaks.

Rather, Jensen is.

Not two weeks into hiatus, the doorbell rings at the Ackles household, Mackenzie answers it, and squeals with laughter that Jensen knows ain’t good.

“Mac Attack!” he hears his co-star call out, laughing.

There’s more ruckus at the front of the house, and Jensen’s rolling his eyes when he meets them in the foyer. But then he’s smirking at his sister and Jared play wrestling, with Jared grabbing hold around her waist and hoisting her over his shoulder. “’Sup Jen?” he says naturally as he walks into the living room with Mackenzie still heaved over him.

She’s laughing and smacking at him, and the she shrieks when Jared tosses her down to the couch with a thump.

Jared jumps at Jensen with a laugh, “You next?”

Jensen flinches, but he’s laughing. “Son, don’t you even think it!”

They move in at the same time for a big, tight hug, and then are interrupted by Mackenzie standing on the couch and smacking the back of Jared’s head, in the way only younger sisters can do – hard but with a sweet smile.

Jared levels a finger at her and a fake glare, “You’re getting’ it later, sister.”

“Try it. I dare ya!” she challenges back while swinging at his head again and laughing.

He grabs at her wrist, slim, lanky fingers curling around her wrist and tugging so she stumbles enough to jar her and she’s shrieking again. But then she jumps forward and launches herself at his side. He’s startled, but ably grabs her, shifts, and gets her onto his back. They’re both laughing and Jensen actually is, too, just watching it all.

“What kinda boo-shit you been learnin’, huh?” Jared asks as he bops her up and down on his back.

“Oh! Dude!” she cries out near his ear, kinda-sorta on purpose. “You oughta check out what they I’m bringing to school on Monday.”

Before Jensen can realize it, they’re marching up the stairs, Mackenzie still piggybacked to Jared. He shakes his head and lets them go, and he’s about three steps towards the kitchen when he hears Jared’s high-pitched laugh and an excited, “Oh my God! Bebe!”

Jensen turns right around with a sigh and hops his way up the stairs. “Mac, you know he’s gonna kill that thing,” he harps as he enters her room, praying Jared hasn’t gotten his hands on it.

But he has. In one gigantic palm is the hamster for Mackenzie’s first grade class. Jared chuckles as he rolls his hand, making the animal step all around his hand. “I can’t believe they put you in charge of kids and animals.”

“Real funny, jerkface,” she complains while pushing at his shoulder and he laughs.

Jared smirks at Jensen while she makes her way out for a phone call. Jensen knows that look, but he’s gotten pretty good at steeling himself against the rage that used to well up inside. “Look at this thing, Jen.”

Jensen crosses his arms and smirks right back. “Mmhmm.” Jared’s hand is flexing, fingers curling over the hamster’s fluffy orange, brown, and white patches of fur. It’s mostly holding steady, but then Jensen notices that it’s trembling. “Dude, you’re freaking it out.”

He chuckles, “Nuh, uh. It’s fine.” He raises his hand between them and arches his palm, fingers angling to the ground and making the hamster stutter around on the little bit of flat real estate of Jared’s hand.

“Jared, seriously. It’s Mac’s work thing. Don’t screw around with it.”

His face settles as does his palm, carefully cupping the tiny animal in his hand. “Dude, why do you always think I’m gonna hurt something.”

“I don’t know … but this is for Mac.”

Jared’s hand moves to his stomach and his eyes go to the animal. His hand’s flexing again, like it can’t decide if it should just hold the hamster or let it roam across his palm and fingers. He’s smiling slightly and watching the tiny ball of fur tramp across his skin, feeling tiny stabs of teeny feet.

“Jay,” Jensen says softly. “Seriously.”

He frowns and looks to Jensen, realizing that Jensen’s not ragging on him or being pissy. He’s being honest and careful. They stare for a bit and it’s not unkind, it’s just there as Jared is settling himself from being crabby for Jensen always ruining his fun.

“Jay?”

“What?”

Jensen points behind him. “Put it back in the cage?”

Jared huffs a little and leans to one side with attitude. “You think I’d do something. Like I’m gonna kill this thing?”

“You’re squeezing it.”

Jared’s huffing and it’s obvious that even his other hand is clenching in annoyance. “I’m not gonna squeeze it to death or anything, c’mon!”

“You are right now,” Jensen replies calmly.

“What?” he harps back and then looks down to his hand to see the fingers tightly wound around the body, not even realizing his anger was forcing this. “Oh my God!” he shrieks and pushes his hands out.

With a tiny, knowing smirk, Jensen moves forward and grabs the hamster from Jared. Carefully. He moves around Jared to put it back into the habitat. He smiles when it ably struts to the water bottle, grabs a few drops, then ambles over to the tube maze Mackenzie went overboard for.

“Shit. I can’t believe – ” Jared mumbles.

Jensen’s still smirking, but he’s trying not to gloat, so he’s biting the inside of his mouth as he turns back to Jared. His hand squeezes high on Jared’s shoulder. “Guy, it’s fine.”

“No, I mean. It’s Mac’s. And I. I didn’t even … My hands are too huge.”

He smacks the back of Jared’s head playfully. “It’s fine.”

Jared’s voice is low and rough. “I didn’t even realize it. I just. I don’t know.” He looks to Jensen with clear eyes and frown, his palms open. “This why you keep telling me no baby animals.”

Jensen wants to give a hearty Hell fuckin’ yes! But he sees the look on Jared’s face and instead smirks. Jensen slaps one hand across the both of Jared’s and squeezes. “You got big dogs to match these mammoth hands. Don’t worry about it.”

“Yeah,” he sighs.

They're holding small smiles, like it's all fine. And then Jensen says carefully, “Just stay away from Tessa, okay?”
